Free Network Tools: common questions
Quick answers about our network tools.
What is my IP address used for?
Your public IP address identifies your connection on the internet. Websites use it to send data back to you, and it can show your rough location and internet provider.
Why is my speed test lower than my plan?
Wi-Fi distance, other devices using the connection, and busy times can all lower speed. For the most accurate result, test on a cable connection with other downloads stopped.
Is it safe to check open ports?
Yes, checking ports on your own connection or server is a normal way to find setup problems. Only scan systems you own or have permission to test.
What does ping tell me?
Ping shows how long data takes to reach a server and come back. Lower numbers mean a faster, more responsive connection, which matters most for games and video calls.
