Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about the Base64 Encoder / Decoder.
Back to the toolWhat is Base64?
Base64 is a way to represent binary data using 64 printable characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and /). It is used in emails, data URIs, JSON APIs and JWT tokens.
Is Base64 encryption?
No. Base64 is only an encoding — anyone can decode it. Never use it to protect passwords or secrets.
What is URL-safe Base64?
It replaces + with - and / with _ and usually removes the = padding, so the result can be used in URLs and file names.
Why does Base64 make data bigger?
Every 3 bytes become 4 characters, so encoded data is about 33% larger than the original.
Why do I get an error when decoding?
The input probably contains characters that are not part of Base64, or it was cut off. Spaces and line breaks are ignored automatically.
