A subnet is a smaller network inside a larger one. Subnetting splits an IP range into parts for security and better organization.
What does /24 mean?
It is CIDR notation: the first 24 bits are the network part. A /24 has 256 addresses, of which 254 are usable for hosts.
How many hosts are in a /27?
A /27 has 32 addresses and 30 usable hosts.
What is a wildcard mask?
The inverse of the subnet mask, used in router access lists and OSPF. For 255.255.255.0 it is 0.0.0.255.
Why are two addresses not usable?
In IPv4, the first address is the network address and the last is the broadcast address. (/31 and /32 are special cases.)
