A UUID (Universally Unique Identifier) is a 128-bit ID written as 36 characters, like 550e8400-e29b-41d4-a716-446655440000. It is practically guaranteed to be unique.
What is the difference between UUID v4 and v7?
v4 is fully random. v7 starts with a timestamp, so IDs sort by creation time — this makes database indexes faster.
Is a GUID the same as a UUID?
Yes. GUID is Microsoft’s name for a UUID. It is often written in uppercase inside curly braces.
Are these UUIDs secure?
They are generated with crypto.getRandomValues, the browser’s cryptographically secure random generator.
Can two UUIDs be the same?
In theory yes, but the chance is so small (1 in 2^122 for v4) that it can be ignored in practice.
